The goal of riding is to learn to move with the horse and not against the horse, working with the horses natural instincts and not fighting against them.

The benefits of horseback riding are many. For the adult it is one of the best forms of exercise using almost every muscle in the body. Through riding the body experiences increased muscle tone and coordination, balance and flexibility in the joints.

Aside from great physical benefits the psychological benefits are many. Riding can be a form of relaxation; many adult riders call it "therapy" especially with all of the demands of today's world. There is a great sense of accomplishment and confidence gained. Children learn to care for and appreciate another living being as well as learning responsibility, teamwork, sportsmanship and gaining confidence in their abilities both on and off the horse.


There are many different styles of riding and many more different breeds of horses and ponies. There is a breed suited to every discipline.


Dressage is a classical form of training for horse and rider, and its emphasis is on correctness and proper riding techniques to achieve the most harmonious relationship with the horse. All styles of riding can use dressage principles to improve the horse's way of going, and responsiveness. In its most advanced levels, the horse and rider appear to be performing an intricate dance effortlessly. Dressage is one of the most beautiful disciplines to watch, and very exciting to learn.

Huntseat goes back to the Hunt - fox hunting, and involves jumping from very small obstacles to those over four feet. In huntseat riding the emphasis is on a smooth stylish ride where the horse seems to jumping for the pure joy of it. If you have ever seen a hunter go around a course of fences in proper form it is a truly elegant and stylish ride. Huntseat and dressage are both forms of the English Seat.
Western riding has many different forms from barrel racing, cutting cattle and reining to the very fancy western pleasure.
